trishkit: (Dr Who think by barbthebrazen)

I've spent the last couple of evenings acquainting myself with Captain Jack and all the folks at Touchwood.

My main thought is: "I've been avoiding watching Supernatural because it scares me and THIS is what I watch instead?"

My other thought is that I'm not sure if I actually love the show, but I can't stop watching.

Re: the scariness factor: it's not so much that the episodes are incredibly terrifying, more that they are disturbing. I admire the darkness of the show, and find myself marvelling: "I can't believe they went there" during just about every episode.

Still, I find myself ambivalent. I don't really love any of the characters, although I enjoy watching them. Jack, Gwen and Tosh are all very attractive and I LOVE the shots of Cardiff (especially that white architecturally nifty frame/girder thingy that is shown frequently from above. And what is that shiny building?).

I haven't managed to really connect with any of the characters yet. Jack isn't the same guy we met on Doctor Who, but that's okay. It is a character that could be rewarding, but I don't feel as if the writers have really explored him yet. We'll see what the future holds.

I quite like Gwen, but she seems a bit inconsistent to me. For example, why would a police officer need weapons training? Sure I understand (and applaud) the need for an opportunity for flirtation, but it just seems out of place.

Owen is mostly creepy, although I do like his leather jacket. My stepfather just gave away one just like it after failing to convince my younger brother to start wearing it (the jacket was too large for me or I would have given it a good home). He does have his moments when I like him.

Tosh I like.

Ianto? So not my type. He looks like he's going to cry all of the time. I can understand why, but that doesn't mean I want to mop up his tears.

I do like that none of the characters are 100% perfect and charming. Their flaws make them seem more realistic, albeit in an imaginary setting.

So, where does that leave me? Still watching.

I like what they are trying to do with the show and will keep watching to see what they come up with next.

I think the show has a *lot* of problems, but like you said, I can't stop watching!

I do think it's getting better, though, and I do very much approve of the 'darkness'.

The later episodes are definitely better than the earlier ones.

I think that the 'darkness' is the main thing that keeps me coming back. They've certainly established that no cows are sacred, so there is a bit of excitment when watching.
