Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow
I loved this movie.
They did a wonderful job of recreating the feel of all of those 40's scifi flicks. The only real things in the movie were the actors, their clothing, and any objects that they could pick up, everything else was cgi. I was a little concerned about how this would look, but it turned out to be one of the most amazing things I've ever seen.
The movie instantly transported you back to the world of Flash Gordon, Metropolis and the comics. I was immediately able to dive into the story without being troubled by nit-picky questions, the way that I often am with movies set in the present. This vision of the future seen through 1940's glasses seems so familiar and iconic that I could suspend my disbelief without effort and just enjoy the story.
I'm not going to go into a lot of story details right now. I will say that I enjoyed every second of it, though. The movie kicked off sedately, which was just the right pace because there was so much to look at on the screen. All hell broke loose soon after, and we were treated to a fast-paced adventure filled with lots of excitement and humour.
Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law and Angelina Jolie were all perfectly cast. Their matinee-idol beauty allowed them to fit seemlessly into the movie. This is actually the first time I've seen Paltrow in anything, so I can't put her performance into any sort of context, but I thought she was great. Her character was annoying, but gradually grew on you as the story progressed. She had many moments that made me laugh out loud (even without dialogue), and she managed to be the kind of woman for whom it was perfectly normal to wear high heels while on an expedition without being detestable (it wasn't entirely her fault that she had to wear them anyways). Polly Perkins kicked ass! And I want to steal her wardrobe.
Jude Law had the right look to pull off the sexy, slender hero type, but he was a little too laid back in some scenes. He and Polly had a great love/hate relationship in the finest screwball comedy tradition. They didn't reach Rosalind Russell/Cary Grant perfection, but they gave it a good try. I guess that would be my main criticism: they didn't go far enough with the dialogue/storyline. However, it was still a lot better than your average scifi flick.
Angelina Jolie was gorgeous as usual, and did a lot with what was a fairly small role. Giovanni Ribisi was excellent. His character was instantly entertaining and lovable. It's tough being the sidekick, but he did a great job.
This movie was obviously made by someone who had a genuine love for the genre. It's filled with rich detail that any classic scifi/comic book lover will revel in. It seems like every robot, weapon and setting can be traced back to a classic movie or comic. We had a lot of fun picking out all of the details (and watch for Lawrence Olivier).
I usually read all about a movie before I go to see it. There are a select few that I choose to see unspoiled because I want to have the full experience. From the moment I saw the trailers for this movie, I've avoided any and all information about it. That's really the best compliment I can pay to any movie!
