Why small towns kick ass
Oct. 6th, 2004 06:25 pmThe wife of the computer tech at my sister's company is extremely pregnant with twins. Yesterday she was walking down the street with her 14 month old (yes, you read that right) and another child of the same vintage that she was babysitting. Of course, we could pause for a moment and ponder that fact that she is actually able to walk and babysit and remain energetic and cheerful when she has been dilated 4 centimetres for the past five days, both babies are head down and ready to rip, etc. etc., but that's another story. For those folks who care or understand, Thursday is the magic day when she'll only be six weeks premature so it will be safer to deliver the babies (a boy and a girl).
Anyhoo, she was walking down the street with two babies when a garbage truck pulled up next to her. The driver, who she had never met, leaned out of the window and asked if she wanted a double stroller. They don't have one yet, so she said yes. He said he'd drop it off and asked where she lived. Thinking that it was something that he had just picked up on his route, she told him that her car was just around the corner. It turned out that he didn't have it with him, so they arranged for him to drop by her house that evening.
Fast forward to that evening. Garbage dude shows up with a shiny new stroller that he and his wife had used for their twins. His kids didn't need it anymore. When he saw Shannon that day, he assumed that both babies were hers and that she could use the stroller. When he got to the house, there was only one baby, so he was a little confused at first. Shannon explained that she did have twins, they just hadn't made an appearance yet, which made garbage dude even happier.
Awwwwwwwwww.
Twins are actually quite common in my area, I don't know if it's the same elsewhere. I'm a twin, and we grew up with several sets of twins (in fact, one of those twins just had twins two weeks ago). Maybe there's something in the water.
There is definitely a parent-of-twins cult. They all seem to immediately bond and offer advice and help to each other, just like garbage dude.
