Happy New Year and all that stuff.

I'm not particularly interested in examining my past misdeeds, so I'll just share my thoughts on the movie we saw last night instead.

You MUST see this movie!

I have enjoyed Wes Anderson's previous movies, but they never really blew me away (and I admit that I couldn't get into Rushmore at all). But The Life Aquatic was amazing! It was funny, beautiful, absurd and touching all at the same time.

I find that I am at a loss for words to describe this film. The locations and sets (especially the ship) were gorgeous in a shabby kind of way. The underwater and wildlife sequences were clever, amusing and quite bizarre. The story and the characters were funny and deeply touching. Part of the joy of this movie for me was watching it completely unspoiled, so I'm not going to go into a lot if detail about how it looks or what happens.

The world that the characters inhabit is really quite silly, but Steve Zissou and his team take it all very, very seriously. You will find lots to amuse you in this film, but there is a real emotional depth that lurks beneath the humour. By the end of the movie I had a genuine affection for all of the characters and was deeply touched by the ending.

Everyone was wonderful in this movie, especially Bill Murray, Owen Wilson and Cate Blanchett. The supporting cast did a great job and the soundtrack (David Bowie songs in Portugese) was great.

Opinion seems to be pretty evenly split on this movie according to the reviews I have read and the word-of-mouth opinions gathered at Pookie's theatre. People either like it a lot or think that it is stupid and boring.

I loved this movie and I really hope that you will too!
