After thrilling to the fantastic writing, exciting plotlines and wonderful acting (don’t look so smug Archer, I’m not talking about you) of last season, I spent the summer anxiously awaiting the return of the Enterprise and her intrepid crew. And this is what we get?

I admit that I missed Part I. And the “previouslies” didn’t shed much light on earlier events. All the same, between the lack of character interaction (did any character actually speak with more than one other regular character?) and the craptacular special effects (Enterprise snuff shots notwithstanding) this episode felt like a half-hearted attempt to clean up messy plotlines quickly. Which was probably the point.

Last season I was shocked when Archer woke up in WWII-era Earth. After the detailed, multi-episode-spanning story arc of last season I was foolishly hoping that TPTB would greedily gobble up the amazing potential of Archer’s predicament and run with it. You’d think that I’d learn by now, wouldn’t you?

Oh well. At least we got to see Trip in civvies. And he provided evidence that he truly is a monkey boy by displaying his preternatural climbing abilities. But we didn’t get to assess T’Pol’s current level of sanity. Or see how Hoshi was dealing with her recent injuries/abduction/torture. On the plus side, I did enjoy Malcolm’s little geek moment. Very cute.

My boyfriend called it about two minutes into the show when he said, “Well you know how they’re going to solve this”, and went on to predict that they would reset the timeline in the end. He doesn’t ever read spoilers, either. I will say that I’m glad they didn’t just erase all of last season. I was kind of worried that they would, in an attempt to get back to the canon that TPTB adhere to so religiously and...nah, I can’t keep typing that and keep a straight face.

Nonetheless, I was a little worried that they’d try to forget last season so that they wouldn’t have to keep up with all of that nasty character development crap that had infected previous episodes.

I still have high hopes for this season. There are some intriguing descriptions for upcoming episodes, so we’ll see what the new regime can conjure up this year.
