Smallville 4.04: Devoted
Oct. 20th, 2004 12:03 amI laughed my ass off during this episode. Or at least I did during the bits when I wasn’t cheering my head off or cringing for Chloe.
Poor Chloe. Poor, poor Chloe.
One of the football players expressed the entire raison d’être of this series when he said, “screw the guys”. When taken literally, I daresay truer words had never been spoken in the annals of Smallville.
Where to begin? Do they always drop so many anvils? There were so many references to colours and superheroes that I lost track of them. I’m not complaining, just wondering.
This was another good episode for Clark. He got to show all the sides of his personality: the self-centered jerk, the snarky sidekick, the enormous dork, and the deathly afraid of girl cooties closet case. Let’s examine them all, shall we?
The Self-Centered Jerk: Clark is definitely Jonathan’s son, isn’t he? Who else could summon up such a prodigious righteous snit at the drop of a towel in the boy’s locker room at the very sight of a Luthor? Clark’s general jerkiness and wrong-headedness with regard to his views of our darling Lex have been discussed many times, so I won’t get into it here. Just know that I often struggle against a strong urge to reach inside my television set, climb up on a stool and give him a slap on the side of his big dumb alien head.
And then, he tops it all off by asking Lex for a favour as soon as they are “friends” again? What the hell?
The Snarky Sidekick: I love Clark and Lois together. He gets to be sarcastic and can try to act superior around her (not that it helps). I loved the seduction scene in the weight room. Lois’ presence really made the scene. I'm going to miss her when she's gone.
The Enormous Dork: Depicted most effectively when he was talking to Chloe about his difficulties with his fellow teammates:
Chloe: What did you expect, hugs and kisses?
The look on Clark’s face said “yes”.
The Deathly Afraid Of Girl Cooties Closet Case: TW really played this for all it was worth. Clark was hilarious in the barn with Chloe, what with all of the panicked looks, little pats on the hand and seeming inability to know what to do with his hands. Same with the weight room scene with the skanky cheerleader and his oh-so-believeable disclosure of the pitiable extent of his sexual resume. Perfectly hilarious.
I have to say that Jonathan seems to be right to be worried about Clark using his abilities to win games for his team. I’m too lazy to do any research to see if a 60 yard pass is normal for a teenager, but the look on Jonathan’s face told me that it’s not. Or possibly the large stick up his ass was causing him pain. Like I said, too lazy to do the research.
I loved Jonathan’s advice to Clark about dealing with his teammates:
Clark: What did you do?
Jonathan: I earned their respect.
trishkit: Blow jobs for everyone!
Oh my god, how I felt for poor, abused Chloe. What a horrible thing to do to her character. I just cringed watching her scenes. But wow, AM did a fantastic job with the part. She is an amazing actress and really played the Stepford chick with gusto. Good for her. I have an enormous amount of sympathy for Chloe and her unrequited love. Being in that situation sucks, and she is handling it with aplomb, but every once in a while you can see her feelings written all over her face. The one thing that Clark did right in this episode was to be upfront with her. He did the best possible thing by stating clearly that he didn’t return her feelings. It won’t make her feel any better, but at least she won’t cling to a hopeless dream.
Oh Lex, I hardly know where to begin. Lex to the rescue? Pouring his heart out to Clark? Finally making up with Clark? I thought that I was reading a fic, but no, there it was on my screen!
Lex and Clark are friends again! Hallelujah! Let the bells ring out!
That said, I wonder what is really going to happen between Clark and Lex in the future. I know that Clark is wrong to blame Lex for withholding information, when he is guilty of the same thing, but come on, the Clark Kent room in the mansion was pretty creepy. I’d be freaked out about that. While I do believe that Lex genuinely wants Clark’s friendship (and more), I have a hard time believing that he would just drop his investigations.
I’ve got lots of thoughts about Lex, some of which are actually G rated, but it’s all been said before. I’ll just sit back for now and be happy that the boys are friends again and try not to dread what the future holds.
