Atlantis: Suspicion
Aug. 10th, 2004 07:09 pmI finally got to see Atlantis: Suspicion" on Monday night.
There has been lots written about this episode that is thoughtful, erudite and insightful, so I'm not gonna do any of that...
Me like. So pretty.
How much do I love that Sheppard says "Okey dokey"?
Well, lots.
In fact I thought that all of the guys on the team were absolutely adorable. You know it's a great show when you find your self saying "I love [character name]" whenever someone onscreen opens his/her mouth.
And Yay! Rodney! You go girl.
I love me some Sheppard but I have to say that I'm having some difficulty buying him as the military leader. He just doesn't have the innate gravitas to pull off the "I'm goofy and charming but I'll blow your head off if I have to" O'Neillish essence.
Or maybe it's just the hair.
That said, I'm fine with Sheppard just the way he is (or even a little less dressed, should that be an option) because it's not like he was brought onto the project to be the military leader. He is the leader by default, and I hope that we will see this concept explored at a later date.
Final thought: does the phrase "with all due respect" ever sound anything but insulting? Do people really say that?

Sheppard is definitely only military leader by default, but he should still act more like he's in charge. Just of the military, of course -- no taking over from Weir! -- but even so, he should have taken Bates down a couple of notches.

Maybe that's because we haven't seen him do much of that? Blowing off of heads, that is. Though his little talk with the Wraith was quite nicely menacing. Yum. ;)

I have heard it used for respectful disagreement (in TV shows) but usually it seems to be an attempt to soften blatant insubordination (or to add a bit of sarcasm). Definitely not respectful.

Date: 2004-08-10 08:22 pm (UTC)I'm sure that he is a good soldier, but he probably doesn't have the kind of command experience that someone in that position would have. We'll see if they go anywhere with that. Although, after the way "Voyager" ignored the whole Maquis plotline, I'm not holding my breath.
I don't see O'Neill as always being as Jack as he is now. I see him as taking the military quite seriously when he was younger and of more junior rank. I think that time and experience would lead to a different outlook and an awareness of just how far you can push the envelope. Sheppard is still too young and puppy doggish (So! Cute!) for me to buy it.
