Now that's cold
Dec. 21st, 2004 10:16 amWe are in the midst of a cold snap at the moment. It is at times like these that I am very thankful that I am no longer an outdoor education teacher or ski instructor.
*shivers at the memories*
Anyways, this cold spell is a little bit different than others I have experienced thanks to my building. Throughout the day on Sunday I could hear the occasional loud noise. It sounded like a large metallic cracking bang, if that gives you any sort of idea of what I mean. I didn't think much of it. I wondered what it was, of course, but I wrote it off as mysterious city noises and went on my merry way. Until bedtime.
Lying in bed, I noticed that the noises were becoming more frequent. Every 20 minutes or so I would hear a loud CRACK. They sounded like they were coming from the building itself. Some sounded closer than others. Some were so loud that they woke me up. Pookie was still at work, so I was all alone, lying awake with visions of the building collapsing around me, doing a mental inventory of the little old ladies who live on my floor (4) and planning on how I would assist in their evacuation.
Pookie came home at 2am and he couldn't offer an explanation for the noises, other than it was probably the building. This didn't make me feel any better, although I was comforted to learn that the noises were indeed real.
In the morning, we ran into the Reg the Super, who told us that the noises were indeed from the building. Apparently this happens every time there is a rapid drop in temperature (it had gone from -10ish to -30 in a day). We were hearing the metal rebar in the concrete balconies contracting in the cold. Reg said that the noises could last for a couple of days depending on the weather. I guess that it is now cold enough because I haven't heard anything since then.
Freaky.
