House: Pilot
Jan. 6th, 2005 01:17 amI got some work accomplished today. Not as much as I needed to get done, but a good day's work nonetheless.
On to more important things: television!
I watched the pilot for House last night. It wasn't one of the stronger episodes, but it served as a good intro to the series.
First of all, I hated the way it was filmed. Yes it was all artsy and tinted and whatnot. But it annoyed me.
Dr. House seemed a little softer than he does in later episodes. It looked like some of Dr. Cuddy's barbs actually hurt him a little. I got the impression that this was the first time that he had treated a patient in a long time, so perhaps that is why he seemed a little uncertain sometimes. Then again, it is probably just because it is the pilot and they are were still trying to see how far they could go with the character. It's much more fun to fanwank an explanation.
I loved Wilson in this episode! I started watching with Occam's Razor, so it took me a couple of episodes to figure out that Wilson wasn't boring. Had I started with the pilot I would have loved him right away! Loved how he lied about his cousin (and badly at that). Loved his friendship with House.
The pilot also gave me a chance to learn more about Foreman. It certainly set the scene for his future disagreements with House. He was quite endearing with the kids and had a nice rapport with Cameron.
I enjoyed the "why did you hire me?" scene with Cameron much more than I thought I would. I had read about it, and thought that it sounded stereotypical and trite. Why did I doubt Hugh Laurie's ability to pull it off? I just don't know. I must be crazy. Maybe I need a doctor.
