"Double-entry bookkeeping."

I laughed a lot during this episode. It was filled with so many great House and Wilson lines that it is hard to pick out my favourite. Couple that with the intriguing look at Chase's history and you've got yourself one rip-snorter of a show.

As I had suspected, our dear, sweet Chase isn't mellow so much as he is emotionally stunted. And understandably so. I love that Patrick Bachau can have such a kind voice and demeanour and can make us believe that he is capable of being a heartless bastard at the same time (okay, so I probably am still seeing him as Sidney from The Pretender, but it really only enhanced his performance on House in my eyes). Poor little floppy-haired Chase. And he fell out of a tree, too! Ow!

In addition to the Chase-angst, we also were treated to a look at his bedside manner. As we've seen before, it is *awesome*. He seems to effortlessly establish a rapport with his patients, especially kids. Chase hasn't left his boyishness behind just because he has earned the right to be on the business end of a stethoscope, and I find that endearing. And an effective strategy for a young-looking doctor to employ as well.

The story of Chase and his pater didn't really hold any surprises for me. I think that enough hints had been dropped in previous episodes that we all pretty much knew what was coming (and the dying bit was rather predictable). I'm not complaining, mind you, good storytelling doesn't require a surprise-a-minute to be compelling.

I found House's reaction to the situation fascinating. We have all seen examples of his instatiable curiosity, but this week it was different. The fact that he was poking around in the life of one his minions seemed to infuse him with extra energy and zeal. He plunged into the morass with enthusiasm and stirred the pot with glee until he realized that he was dealing with real people and emotions and he retreated. I'm still a little confused by the whole process. As he did with Cameron, House seems to start off with a desire simply to know exactly what is going on and a mischievious impulse to interfere so that he can observe the results. Somewhere along the line he is reminded that the people he is toying with are real people with real feelings. I think that he has tried so hard to insulate himself from the world that he tends to see people as abstract concepts. But this cunning plan for emotional distance just doesn't work, as it is contrary to his natural impulse towards understanding everything around him. You can't do that without getting involved. I also think that it is telling that House let Chase go without saying anything after Chase's little speech about not caring. I'm sure those were familiar words to House, as he probably says similar things to himself all of the time. I believe that was the moment that he decided to let the subject drop.

Or I could be completely out to lunch. It has been known to happen.

And Wilson, you are such a slut. Call me.

Great review! I've been trying to fit Chase's emotional reaction to his father into what we know about his personality, and I think you put it very well - he's stunted. Exactly. And thank you for pointing out that he is excellent at relating to patients, especially kids; he's got a great big brother vibe, not surprising for someone who's had to take care of his own mom at such a young age...

BWAHAHA! Too true.

It's funny, at first I was extremely impressed by Chase's attitude, and then I started thinking "no one is *that* well-adjusted". He's just a young pup, I daresay there is hope for him to become unstunted.

He definitely has the big brother thing happening, doesn't he? I have to admit that I wasn't too interested in Chase's character during the first few episodes, but he has certainly turned into an interesting fellow. He and Wilson are the two characters that have surprised me the most so far.
