We saw "The Village" last night. I've enjoyed all of M. Night Shyamalan's movies (yes, even "Unbreakable"), and I wasn't disappointed this time. But my primary reasons for enjoying his movies are not the "twists" and scares. In fact, I think that the twist in this movie was unnecessary. To me, the movie would have been just as enjoyable without the mystery aspect. This is because Shyamalan does a fantasic job of creating real, charming characters that you genuinely want to explore (hellooooo Joaquin).

While watching "The Village" I had the feeling that he was just trying too hard. It's as if he feels obligated to keep on making "The Sixth Sense" over and over again. Like in "Signs", "The Village" has a cast of intriguing characters that a very talented cast bring to life. I am amazed at how even the smallest roles are played to perfection. "The Village" has a very interesting premise that would stand up to scrutiny if it was revealed earlier in the movie.

Even though Shyamalan keeping stealing from the same bag of tricks when directing his movies, as a writer he continually comes up with creative and different ideas. Maybe sometime he'll try a different approach.
