Atlantis: 109 Home

Atlantis: Home

You may have noticed that when I like a show, I like a show. So, it may come as no surprise when I say “Great episode”. I’m unoriginal that way.

I don’t really care about the originality of the storyline. I think that this concept has been recycled so many times because it is a tried and true method of character development. And I can never get enough character development. Especially when the characters develop the right way.

First of all, I have to say that I love Elizabeth. I’ve been puzzled by the amount of bile that has been directed towards her over at TWoP. I think she’s great. We’ve had lots of hints about what goes on in her head, and this episode gave us more insight into her motivations. I confess that I’m happy because everything that I saw in this episode is just like how I see Elizabeth in my head.

Anyways, the scene in Shep’s quarters? All the pigs in the world could not squee loud enough to drown me out. Meant. To. Be.

And I must say that NarimSimon looks pretty darn good when he’s not wearing a jumpsuit. I thought that it was very interesting that Elizabeth hadn’t told McKay (and therefore in my fevered brain, anyone else) about NarimSimon. This tells me that she viewed her video message as a goodbye. I thought perhaps that her discomfort in her scenes with NarimSimon were due to the fact that things were going much differently than she would have imagined, and this is one of the factors that helped her to figure out what was going on.

And McKay was perfect. He really does get all of the good lines. I laughed when his first action upon returning home was to plop down on the couch and watch tv. And to eat stale junk food. The man is 100% geek. That’s why we love him.

I’ve bitched (mildly) before about how I have some difficulties buying Sheppard as a leader. I thought that this episode showed Shep dealing with a situation very effectively, and yet in his own insouciant style. I especially enjoyed seeing him taking a swig of beer as he held his “guests” at gunpoint. Perfect. Even though he was acting like his normal dorky self, I could totally believe that he knew exactly what was going on. Nicely done.

I’m glad that we got to see Teyla let down her hair a little. She didn’t have much to work with, but it was enough to let us believe that she is more than just a sage, stoic alien. She can be girly! Yay! Although I still choose to believe that Athosian jokes will be just as funny as Jaffa jokes. Simply because it tickles me.

Ford is another character who is managing to make an impression even though he doesn’t get a lot of airtime. He has consistently proven to be a by-the-book soldier (he was the only one to keep his mask on during their first visit to the planet), yet he’s also believable as a young, enthusiastic kid. The term “bright-eyed and bushy-tailed” could have been invented to describe him. And I want to believe that Teyla was the one to invite Ford to Shep’s party. She must have had some control since she was sharing his reality. She’s just waiting for the perfect opportunity to jump him.

I can also fanwank at length about why everyone saw Hammond instead of Jack, but it’s pretty lame. And long, shockingly enough.

BONG BIDDLE BIDDLE BING!

The man is a genius with language.

He really is. He gets it JUST right every time.

Or he gets it completely, gloriously wrong. Which is even better.

Atlantis makes me giggle so much more than SG-1 ever has. I just about died laughing when Sheppard (I will never call him Shep) took a swig of beer while pointing a gun. Great stuff. When they walked into that apartment, I knew it couldn't be his. No way. He'd have to be rich!

McKay rocks. SUCH a geek. ^_^

This episode and Underground have made me like Teyla more than I did. She actually has personallity! And she's not a female Teal'c. She drinks, and she has fun. Now if she'd just relax a bit (personality-wise) when they're on missions, she'd be great. Even though I still want to smack TPTB whenever she and Sheppard are thrown together. There's just no chemistry there. It's almost painful to watch them try to force it.

I was very sad that Ford got so little screen time. I *heart* Ford. He definitely needs a girl. And hooking him up with Teyla would definitely solve the little problem of her and Sheppard, so I'm all for it! ^_^

Oh yeah, and -- People don't like Weir? Are they nuts? I love her, personally. She's a good, strong woman, without being a witch, and her insecurities about the job make her human and accessible. And she has great chemistry with Sheppard. What's not to like?

When they walked into that apartment, I knew it couldn't be his.

Yeah, I thought that was a little strange. Although I can see him being a golfer.

Lately I haven't minded Teyla and Shep (I've been calling that in my head since the series started, and now that we have canon confirmation I'll never stop. It's easier to type. And yet it led to several more sentences. Hmmm...). Teyla seems more natural and unforced so it hasn't seemed as artificial. Plus, our John is so the kind of guy who will flirt with anyone (up to and including his expedition leader. I bet he likes it even more when it is inappropriate). In my humble opinion, Weir and Shep shouldn't get together for a while (if indeed TPTB chose to put them together at all), so I have no problem with either of them getting some in the meantime. I'm not a slut, but I like it when my characters are.

I don't get the Weir thing either. It's so hard to do a good female leader-type character, and I think that they've hit the jackpot with her.
