Atlantis: 110 The Storm

What a way to leave us hanging.
Bastards.
I’ve always enjoyed watching the Stargate episodes that “pay homage” (aka rip off) other movies and television shows. “The Storm” is no exception. I was totally expecting Shep to suddenly say “yippee yi ki yay, motherfucker”. I imagine one or two other viewers had the same thought.
Sheppard was excellent in this episode. I’ve been slowly gaining more respect for him as a soldier over the past couple of episodes. I am now starting to see him as a very cunning person. He’s sneaky and smart and sly and can also be quite vicious. This makes him a formidable enemy when roused. And my, he’s certainly roused now.
I am fascinated by Weir, I’m not sure why. She’s strong without being bitchy and smart without being pedantic. And I really like her hair. She was so cute when Sheppard announced he had hidden the C4. She sounded so smug and happy that I expected to hear a Nelsonesque “ha HA”. I loved seeing her break out her much vaunted diplomatic skills on Koyla. She made an excellent point and sounded very reasonable and in control. I also thought that Koyla had the perfect reaction – sheer and utter disbelief at her claims. Who would believe that people from another galaxy could have a closer relationship to the Ancients than the locals? I assume that they don’t share that juicy little tidbit as a matter of course. She is still way better at the negotiating/diplomacy thing than Shep. Why do they even let him speak?
Koyla was just plain scary. Robert Davi was made to be a bad guy. I loved him on Profiler, but he’s got the face, the voice and the menacing gravitas that cry out for evil roles. Even though he’s in charge of an ill-trained (by his standards, at least) crew, he is still convincing as a serious threat.
And he’s so mean to Rodney! Yes, I know that everyone is mean to Rodney, but it’s different when you make him bleed. Despite Shep’s apparent disdain, I didn’t lose any respect for Rodney when he gave in and explained his lightning plan to Koyla. The guy is a scientist and an egomaniac. He’s not equipped to withstand torture on any level. Especially when he was separated from his friends while it happened. He has displayed surprising levels of bravery and selflessness so far, but I’m glad that the writers let him react in a believable manner to this situation.
And I love the McKay and Zelenka show. More of that, please! And let's have a big cheer for the Canadian shout-out. Hurricane Hazel, the storm used as a point of reference for every fucking rainfall since the 50's.
While I had no problem with Rodney’s weakness, Beckett just bugged me. I hated his attitude for the entire episode. He’s always been pessimistic and dour, but previous episodes have at least allowed him to display some compassion and energy. In this episode he just seemed depressed. Or possibly narcoleptic. I think he may have lost consciousness there a couple of times. Or maybe it was just me.
I’m actually happy to have a show where every single character doesn’t fling themselves blindly into danger, heedless of their personal safety. And perhaps they could have better explained the danger they faced had they taken flight. I was under the impression that the only safe place on the planet was the control room due to the massive bursts of electricity that would be flying around, so I had a hard time understanding why the hell they would choose to hang out in a (presumably metal) spaceship in the middle of a clearing. Ford? Teyla? What the hell were you thinking?
I also hate the yellow and grey medical jackets. Blech. They also remind me of the uniforms the lifties had to wear at a skihill I worked at when I was in university. They were seriously ugly. I was an instructor so we had lovely white jackets with purple, lime green and sky blue accents (thank you Sun Ice). The hill was in Northern Ontario, so I didn’t wear the matching purple racing tights, preferring something warmer, but all of the guys did. They just wanted to show off their butts, I’m sure. Downhill skiing, the natural habitat of the closeted white male.
