Covenant

Well spank me rosy and paint me green, that was one helluva episode. Holy crap, John Glover is truly an amazing actor. He raises the show to a whole new level. I’m really glad that I didn’t see this episode when it originally aired, or I would have been going insane(r) all summer waiting for the season premiere. At least you guys won’t have to wait much longer, my gratification will be delayed until next week, alas (thank god for spoilers).

I was blown away by John Glover’s performance as Lionel. He is a character that I had come to hate (and love, of course), but I had started to feel a little bit of sympathy for him in Memoria. Despite this sympathy, I am still boggled by his continued willingness to screw his son (I guess I didn’t really need to go there) even though he seemed to genuinely regret his past misconceptions. With this thought in mind, I was reluctant to believe his performance in the jail cell, but he ended up winning me over, the bastard. I knew that he was ill, so I knew that he wasn’t lying to his son. Lex is made of sterner stuff, however, and he was truly chilling in his rejection. Amazing performances from both of them.

Lex really showed that he has his father’s capacity for hatred in this episode. I found his scenes to be especially affecting because he seemed so young in comparison to Lionel. It is frightening to think of how a young man can be that cold and vindictive. And delicious.

The Luthorness of Lex in the past few episodes has made me second guess his motives for some of his actions. For example, when he was informing Chloe of the possible repercussions of testifying, I thought that he was perhaps trying to make sure that she would indeed testify, rather than warning her off. Chloe is the type of gal who loves a challenge, and I could imagine that Lex’s concern and caution would be just the sort of thing to goad her into action.

Chloe just kicks ass, she’s my favourite female character. It’s always fun to see her with Lionel, but the scene with Jonathan was hilarious. She had all the right reactions. That was quite the explosion, wasn't it? Given the spoilers I’ve read, I had assumed that the explosion would be a little bit more ambiguous. I have no idea how she’s going to get out of that one. And what about her dad? I’m sure she wouldn’t become a schmoopy Lana-the-orphan clone, but I’d prefer to keep her as unscarred emotionally as possible. She's a bright spot on the show and I don't want to lose that.

And Clark, for the love of God, stop going to see Lionel! You just aren’t equipped to deal with his manipulative abilities. He’s a magnificent bastard and you are a big dumb alien. Run away! Now! But don’t go super fast. He’ll notice.

I’m sure lots has been said about the big breakup, but I’ve got to ask: who the hell says “this friendship is over”? It seems so fifth grade and … girly. Oooooooh. I get it. Forget I ever asked.

I can understand that Clark was shocked and angry over his discovery. I thought it was creepy enough when I discovered that this weird guy had found one of my gloves and had it hanging over his bed, I can’t imagine what it would be like to stumble upon Lex’s room. And Lex really should have anticipated that Lionel would have found the room. He was dead and he was committed, Lionel had full access to all of his secrets.

OK, I have a confession to make. I have a crush on John Schneider. He was my favourite Duke boy when I was 10, so I just can’t help it, honest! I can’t stand Jonathan, but I do think he’s got a nice ass. Come on, he’s only ten years older than me, he’s still within the realm of doability.

Ahem, so did anyone else notice that Jonathan was in a similar position to The Hanged Man when he was lying in the cave? Very appropriate.

Hmmmmmm. The Lex/Lana scenes were very interesting. After Clark’s reaction to finding out about Lex’s investigations, I can see Lex realizing that he is alone (poor little pumpkin) and deciding to cultivate Lana. He might do this for two reasons: because he needs a friend, and Lana has always been very supportive and forgiving, and/or to get even with Clark. I was suspicious of the goodbye scene at the airport. I’m sure that it crossed his mind that Clark would be there.

All in all, if they are going to give Lex a girlfriend this season, I’d prefer Chloe, or someone else with a brain. It would be especially interesting to see her reaction to the explosion (assuming she has enough body parts left to have a reaction), especially if her father was killed or injured.

But such speculation is pointless for now, since the decisions are out of our hands and the big show is on tonight. I await the details with eager anticipation.

Enjoy the show everyone!

I so thought of this too...Lex got his 'smooth-talk' tone of voice into gear...I'm so glad you picked up on this too....(btw, I'm checking out your old posts cuz I'd like to befriend you...may I?)

Of course you may! I've been meaning to friend you for a while myself, and will friend you back.

Lex is an endlessly fascinating character, isn't he? I can just never forget what he is eventually going to become.

I'll still love him even when he is evil, of course.

Great! Thnx!
Oh, Lex/MR is hypnotic…I will not be able to handle it when he goes bad, because T(stupid)PTB will no doubt make it heart-wrenching and I’ll flee to the denial fics (that’s all I write, anyway)…ah! Blessed denial…..lalallallalllalaaallalaa!

Denial is the most wonderful state of being ever invented.

I'll camp out with you in the land of Lex when the evilness begins. We can roast marshmallows and write woobierific love stories.
