Is there some kind of religious thingy going on right now?

I ask because it is midnight on a Friday and the bells of the church behind my building are ringing. They have also been ringing at noon at least a couple of times this week.

It is very pretty, and I love listening to them, but I just wanna know WHY!

Still completely stumped. I pass by the church on my way to work, and there was nothing posted that gave any indication of what was going on today.

Oh well.

Maybe the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity? I don't know why they'd ring the bells for that. But bells are pretty.

I used to watch my dad ring the bells at St George's when I was small.

That is so cool! I pass by that church regularly on my way to the library. I read about its architecture on the "Doors Open Ottawa" site and have been meaning to check it out. I love the whole bells concept. It is so neat that your Dad got to ring them!!

Ottawa is such a frustrating city. It seems as if we always find out about events AFTER they have occurred, and you can never find out why flags are at half mast or bells are ringing. Drives me batty!

I grew up in that church, literally. My dad was the church sexton (full-time and then part-time) for pretty much my whole life until only about 5 years ago when he moved out west. We lived in the house next door on Gloucester (Nagle House, "thought to be the oldest house in Centretown" as it says on the heritage plaque) until I was seven. Most of my dreams still take place in various parts of the church. There used to be some wicked cool hidden panels and shortcuts and things, though most of that's been renovated away.

At one point I had a link to some official website that announced why the flags were half-masted but I can't find it anymore. Stupid government.

I am utterly fascinated by the history of a place. I would always look at the old houses in the town next door to mine and wish that I could look inside or live there (my hometown is/was a summer destination filled with cheap cottages and hotels - it has history, but nothing that can be seen in its architecture, that's for sure). How wonderful that you got to do just that! And hidden panels! OMG! How could they remove them? Bastards.

I immediately fell in love with Ottawa when I came here for a visit about three years ago. Sure, I had been here before, but never as an adult. I know that you'd like to head West, but I've already done that - Ottawa is the place for me for now. I adore all of the buildings and the sense of history. I think it is a pleasure just to walk down the street. It always seems like something is going on, and I really wish that it was easier to find out just what!
